A distant star.
Bright.
Standing out from all the others.
Grey? Or white? Yellow perhaps?
So far off. In a way only very-distant can ever be.
But wait!
Closer.
It’s blue!
Oooh! What’s that? Something smaller, grey.
Ignore it. It’s nothing, just a remnant. The past. Possibly a moon.
And that?
That IS yellow, and so bright!
The future.
Don’t get too close, it burns.
There though, the blue, that looks welcoming. Refreshing. And there’s some green. Green and blue. An ocean, a forest.
Sand.
Waves from the ocean wash onto the sand. Crabs scuttle towards the forest leaving tell-tale trails behind them. Empty shells, dried leaves.
A house.
Almost on the beach. Not quite in the forest.
A monkey in the nearest tree watches.
A man steps out of the house, he is talking to someone. There, behind him.
A young girl.
They walk together along the edges of both sand and trees. They are holding hands. Who can say who is leading the other?
They come to a track and follow it to a clearing. There is a vehicle there. A pick-up. The man climbs in the front and starts the engine. The young girl climbs into the back…. jumps into the back… skips…. Dances …. unfolds herself into the back. She sits on a pile of cushions and taps on the window behind her.
It’s her birthday.
The man eases the car towards the unmade road. Dirt, stone, eventually tarmac. The forest leaves the beach that leaves the ocean all far behind. As they drive the town comes closer.
Just.... not yet.
The girl starts singing.
The song is old. She is young. But she knows the words.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey.
The skies are not grey.
They are blue. A single cloud the only grey.
Or is it the past?
A moon?
Beyond the blue, the sun blazes bright yellow.
And then in the distant dark.
Pinheads of silver light.
Stars.
One stands out from all the others.
