Jack watches the moon.
It ain’t full – but it’s close.
Waking later the same night he looks up at the stars, he feels as if he is swimming at the bottom of a silver aquarium.
He knows it ain’t the equinox anymore – but it’s still close.
Autumn has begun.
Theoretically.
Though the temperatures tell him it’s still summer.
He supposes winter must also be close.
Even though it isn’t.
He ain’t drunk – but he’s close.
He shouldn’t drive.
But he does.
Up a dirt and gravel track through the forest.
He leaves the car at the road for someone else to drive, and walks back.
Thick slices of moonlight rip through the shadows causing him to stumble.
It’s like being on a fairground-ride of light and shade.
It ain’t dark.
But it’s close.
