The Virtue of the Brussel Sprout.

Did you learn anything today?

I learnt that the word ‘virtue’ has a Greek origin from the word aretë, originally meaning excellence.

This may or may not be true.

I certainly haven’t spelt it correctly anyhow.

What is definitely true is that there were no melons in the market on Sunday. An invisible and unwanted frontier between summer and autumn has been crossed.

The stalls that had been selling them the previous week were full of cabbage.

Green and purple.

Not the same thing at all!

Even if the melons were green.

On the outside.

I’m not a big fan of cabbage, though I appreciate its virtues.

But Brussel sprouts exude excellence.
