Annie's Lament.

rhetorical

Annie has just sold her house.

Although this had been her intention, she is now regretting it.

She has closed one door and is about to open one she has no desire to enter.

The house she has just sold was perfect. It is on the south coast of France, very close to the Spanish border.

Annie likes the sun.

The house is beautiful, it stands on it’s own and when people go past they sigh at it’s beauty.

Those who bought it are very happy.

Annie is sad.

‘Why did you sell it?’

‘Brexit.’

Annie no longer feels safe.

She also thinks it’s time to live where more people are speaking English.

Annie has a hearing aid and French is not easy for her, especially now that she has to lip read.

‘Where are you thinking of going to?’

‘Newhaven.’

There is no sun in Newhaven, I know because I was there yesterday.

I’m not sure she will hear significantly more English there either.

I tried to buy an orange in the high street at 8.30 am on a Saturday morning.

It should have been easy.

It wasn’t.

In Spain, oranges grow on the trees.
